Plant Snacks Vegan Cheddar Cassava Root Chips: Cassava root seems like an unusual choice for a snack, but then again other root vegetables like potatoes, sweet potatoes, and beets have all found their way into our snack aisle. These chips are less thick than pita chips and more crispy than Wheat Things; they're dusted with a vegan cheddar powder that also appears to be worked into the cracker itself. You could tell it was not milk-based cheddar, yet it still had a satisfying savory flavor, in the same way that vegan mac and cheese can t... (read more) 3.5/5.0

Tiger Sugar Brown sugar boba milk tea with cream mousse: Stopped by the Tiger Sugar stand on Main Street in Flushing on a Friday night and waited in line for about 15 minutes to get a cup of the famed brown sugar boba milk tea with cream mousse. The Flushing location is the first in the US from Taiwanese chain Tiger Sugar; there is an additional spot now in Sunset Park, and the latest will be opening in Chinatown this Saturday, so all major Chinese neighborhood across Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens are covered. Clio Strawberry Greek Yogurt Bar: This is a really intriguing take on a chocolate bar alternative, consisting of a solid strawberry-flavored greek yogurt filling (its texture set somewhere between nougat and frozen yogurt as its refrigerated, but not frozen) coated with a thin shell of chocolate. Though it's fairly high in saturated fat (6g), it's overall healthier than a normal chocolate bar, with less sugar (10g sugar) and an impressive amount of nutrients (8g of protein, and over 100% of your daily recommended Vitamin C)... Coco Leaf Lavender milk tea with flan pudding: Coco Leaf is a Vietnamese dessert shop on Newbury street in Boston featuring colorful multilayer drinks with ingredients like pandan, longnan, and mungbean. I opted for a lighter milk tea with no added sugar, but with flan pudding (a contradiction, I know) to get a sense of their toppings. The milk tea had a rich, creamy flavor, an indication of higher quality milk, while the lavender was pleasantly light. The pudding was also good, with a slippery texture just set enough and tasting of bro... (read more) 3.5/5.0

Tatte Bakery Pistachio croissant: I guess I've been craving pistachio recently. This pistachio croissant from Tatte in Cambridge is dusted with crushed pistachios and had a marzipan-like sweet almond paste lightly mixed inside. Quality texture - flaky crust with a soft airy, slightly elastic interior. 3.5/5.0

New City Microcreamery Fennel and pistachio ice cream: At a little over $4, this kiddie scoop from Cambridge ice cream shop New City Microcreamery was fairly micro-sized, but large enough to get a good sense of the quality. The ice cream, made with liquid nitrogen, has a smooth consistency. I was hoping for more aniseed licorice flavor from the fennel, but it mostly tasted like a solid milk base with bits of pistachio, though there was a little something extra to the aftertaste that told you it wasn't just straight-up vanilla. Would come agai... (read more) 3.5/5.0
