Wiz Bang Bar Smith Teamaker Big Hibsicicle Sherbert: In the Pine Street Market, an indoor food hall in downtown Portland, is a soft serve and sundae bar named Wiz Bang from Salt & Straw, the ever-popular ice cream shop that has branched outside of the city to several LA and San Francisco locations. Central to Salt & Straw's success is their ability to strike a chord between the familiar and unexpected, with comforting flavors that are also intriguing and sometimes daring. The soft serve that I ordered, the Smith teamaker big hibiscicle sherber... (read more) 4.0/5.0

Oorifood Premium Garlic Snack: Since moving to the Bay Area, I've been impressed with how well American grocery stores stock Asian snacks in their ethnic food aisles. Berkeley Bowl in particular has an array of both Japanese and Chinese staples, including dried seafood, shrimp crackers, and multiple varieties of rice crackers (even carrying their own in the bulk section). But one thing that I have missed is Korean snacks, which I had easy access to back in Cambridge, MA since I lived close to an HMart. Luckily, I recent... (read more) 4.0/5.0

Taiwan Bento Soymilk: When it comes to beverages, the Taiwanese just do them better. Classics like Apple Sidra and Hey Song are much less sweet than American sodas, taste crisper, and are simply more interesting. What I'm rating today isn't a bottled or canned product, but it's representative of the same qualities. At Taiwan Bento, a shop close to the 19th street Oakland BART station that specializes in Taiwanese street food like gua bao and five-spice fried chicken, they make an excellent housemade soy milk. ... Sweetheart Cafe Taiwan Style Milk Tea with Boba: This hole-in-the-wall on Durant in Berkeley features a small counter overflowing with asian snacks and walls plastered with laminated drink menus (items listed in Chinese followed by English). The first time I stopped by shortly after it opened its doors for the day, I was informed that the boba had not yet been delivered from Oakland, where they have a sister cafe. Returning several weeks later on an impulse at around 11pm (they are open past midnight on the weekends), I opted for their T... (read more) 4.0/5.0

Berkeley Bowl Coconut mango pomegranate organic chews: Power bites are the new granola bar. These soft chewy energy bites combine dried fruit, oats, and nuts - an ultra-portable trail mix. Coconut and mango add a tropical flavor while pomegranate provides a tartness that cuts through some of the richness. While they are super tasty, I don't find them to be very filling. If you have good portion control, you'll likely enjoy this treat. 4.0/5.0

Coppenrath Traveler Cookies on Tour: German cookies shaped as rectangular stamps each featuring a different city from Copenhagen to Istanbul to San Francisco. Favors European geography, but it's still quite fun to explore since there are at least 15 different countries represented - I rarely got the same city within a single serving. Exceptionally good value at $3 for a sizable bag. I purchased the caramel flavor, which had a sweet and buttery spiced molasses flavor. Would definitely purchase again. 4.0/5.0
