Bricolage Crunchy coconut curry beef chips: On principle, I typically don’t write reviews of snacks at sit-down restaurants (my current working definition of a snack is an item that by itself is not a full meal and can be eaten with one hand on the go - I know it doesn’t work for everything I review here, but that’s the best I’ve been able to come up with). But the crunchy coconut curry beef chips from Park Slope-based Vietnamese gastropub Bricolage are too special not to review. Razor-thin slices of beef come in a fun resealable pack... According to the ingredients, it contains “flavor of egg,” followed by an impressive list of chemical ingredients. At the end of the ingredients list is a warning that the product may contain traces of shrimp and eggs. If there is only trace amounts of actual egg, what is it that makes these chips taste like hard boiled eggs? Because, in fact, they bizarrely taste ve... (read more) 3.0/5.0

While I liked the sharp cheddar powdered flavoring that coats the chips, the combination of vegetable with cheese is a little odd and doesn’t quite come together. Purchased from Whole Foods. 3.0/5.0

The chips are thin and slightly crispy but mostly saturated with oil. Seasoned with a sweet tangy vinegar-based powder, it has all the classic flavorings of a bbq chip. It falls squarely in the middle - just so so. 3.0/5.0

Their range of chips are healthier yet still tasty and familiar, like these jalapeño tortilla chips. The chips are definitely spicy, with a heat that cumulates and overall flavor reminiscent of a good salsa minus the tomato. Well balanced, with the sweet flavor of bell pepper combined with a tasty spice blend. A very likable snack. 4.0/5.0

Despite having high levels of “healthy fat,” avocado oil has somehow helped produce chips with 30% less fat than regular. Healthier may be more accurate than healthy, but health aside, these are still quality crunchy kettle chips, with a largely sweet barbecue flavor. I can’t say I tasted anything that would have made me guess these were made from a non-standard cooking oil. If you want to feel a little better about eat... (read more) 3.5/5.0
