Snacklins Barbecue Plant Crisps: I purchased this bag of plant-based "cracklings" from Whole Foods not knowing anything about the brand's Shark-Tank success story. The vegan crispy, puffed crisps are made with a combination of yuca, onions, and mushrooms and have a light, melt-in-your-mouth texture that is definitely the closest I've ever tasted to meat-based pork crackling (though more like the softer versions than the heavily fried crunchier ones). Comparing it to a meat product is a little unfair though, because they a... (read more) 3.5/5.0

Calbee Black Pepper Potato Crisps: There are two Japanese versions of Pringles that I've seen on the shelves from major brands Calbee and YBC. Both come in familiar tennis-tube packaging and feature a hyperbolic paraboloid-shaped stackable chip. The differences are minor: the Japanese chips are a bit thicker and tend to taste more of fried potato than of their powdered flavoring. These black pepper flavored chips have a decent spiciness to them and are otherwise fairly expected – neither good nor bad. I recently learned t... (read more) 3.0/5.0

Calbee Cheddar Cheese Crisps: These are puffed corn chips, similar in texture to fried shrimp chips you get from certain types of Chinese restaurants. In other words, they have a type of crispy-styrofoam-like texture rather than resembling potato chips or crisps. Overall, the cheese flavor is so-so; I definitely didn't like it enough to buy it again. 2.5/5.0

Calbee Mentaiko cod roe potato crisps: These are Calbee branded potato crisps seemingly designed to compete directly with Pringles, as they come stacked in a similarly-shaped tube. The potato chips have a light seasoning on them but mostly taste of plain pringles, with a little bit of chili flavoring. Too plain to be interesting, although from the packaging, it looked to be a special Japanese flavor worth trying. 2.5/5.0

Pringles Consomme potato crisps: These are a Japanese exclusive flavor of Pringles, retaining much of the familiar taste and texture of the American classic but with an addictive onion soup-type taste. It's just as flavor-saturated as the American type and generally very tasty as far as junk food goes. Would recommend trying them if you come to Japan! 3.5/5.0

Sensible Portions Sour cream and onion garden veggie crisps: The closest thing you'll find to Pringles at the co-op, these sour cream and onion potato crisps a remarkably similar flavor profile and are frankly pretty addictive. Supposedly also contains broccoli, spinach, and peas but achieves an almost identical salty, creamy onion flavor and melt-in-your-mouth texture. Purchased at the Park Slope Food Coop. 3.5/5.0
