Forager Wild Blueberry Cashewgurt: While almond and soy are typically in the spotlight for dairy-alternative foods, San Francisco-based Forager utilizes cashews for the same range of products, including cashew milk and yogurt. Continuing my survey into non-dairy yogurts, I purchased several "cashewgurt" yogurt flavors from Berkeley Bowl during a recent sale. The organic Wild Blueberry flavor I tried first was the best. Its texture is slightly runnier than pudding (but not my much) and has a creamy and sweet flavor. It's mo... (read more) 4.0/5.0

Kettle Brand Korean Barbecue Korean Chips: These chips really do taste like Korean barbecue (galbi to be specific), with a sweet, garlicky smoked flavor (and, of course, soy). Kite Hill Peach Almond Milk Yogurt: Familiar peach flavor is given a unique twist with sweet, nutty flavor of almond milk. Thinner consistency is to be expected from a dairy-free yogurt, but it's special enough to give it a try even if dairy-free is not a strict diet requirement. 3.5/5.0

Chun Guang Coconut Candy: A consultation prize after a bad Thai meal, this complimentary milky-white coconut-flavored hard candy has a mellow, creamy taste. More nutty than most coconut treats, sweet but not overpoweringly so. One of the best candies I've had in recent memory. 4.0/5.0

50 Tea Longan Red Date drink with grass jelly: On my last visit to Oakland, iTea was out of ice and only offering hot beverages. Given the beautiful weather, I decided to go across the street to a new tea shop instead. Named 50 Tea, the shop is iconic Chinatown – half of the storefront is for tea and ice cream while the other half is for purchasing various goods like DVDs and small trinkets and gifts. Their walls are covered in hand-written menu additions with distinctly Asian flavors like winter melon and sour plum. I opted for thei... (read more) 4.0/5.0
