Frito Lay BBQ Cheetos: I believe that these steak-flavored BBQ Cheetos are a Japanese exclusive. They have the familiar fried corn snack texture of regular cheetos but are coated in a brown-ish red powder coating. They don't taste like American BBQ flavor, which tends to be very sweet, with a sort of tangy vinegar flavor. This one instead tastes more like meat, but has a strong sweetness that I find hard to place. The sweetness really took me by surprise and is not a taste that I personally enjoy. Purchased a... Frito Lay Cheetos ゴチパ Party Combo with Popcorn: Frito Lay has different flavors for American classics available in Japan, which I had already experienced with Doritos. This was my first time seeing Cheetos in Japan, and while the shape of crunchy Cheetos was familiar, the cheese flavoring and combination with plain popcorn was a departure. Using a combination of cheddar, gouda, and parmesan, the cheese powder has a milky more creamy flavor that I personally do not like, reminding me of powdered milk. And the snack overall is much less ... (read more) 2.0/5.0

Frito Lay Pizza-La Ebimayo Chips: Pizza-La is a takeout pizza chain in Japan second in popularity only to Domino's. While I haven't actually had their pizza before, I have had pizza in Japan several times from chains like Pizza Hut, takeout at grocery stores, and acclaimed pizzeria restaurants, so I've experienced some of the regional specialties tailored to Japanese tastes. In particular, it's common to see mayonnaise drizzled across the top of pizza pies, giving the pizza a creamy, tangy, and sweet flavor (the sweetness ... (read more) 3.0/5.0

Frito Lay Takoyaki Balls: I was both surprised and not surprised to find that Frito Lay has a presence in the snack aisles of Japan; I've seen Lay's potato chips and Cheetos corn snacks, but these Japan-specific takoyaki corn puffs were an exciting find. The corn puff balls are about the same size as cheese puffs in the US, and they're flavored with Otafuku Takoyaki sauce, which is a staple brand here for various condiments. Traditionally, takoyaki are battered octopus balls that are topped with a thick brown sauce... (read more) 4.0/5.0

Fugetsu-Do Peanut Butter Mochi: Long-standing Japanese confectionary shop Fugetsu-Do, located in Japantown in downtown Los Angeles, sells its mochi at various stores around California (I recently found their products at Berkeley Bowl). This set of Peanut Butter Mochi was purchased from Marukai in Glendale, LA and contained 6 sizable pieces of soft, chewy mochi filled literally with chunky peanut butter (maybe Jiff). It feels almost sacrilegious but simultaneously like a sort of twisted American dream where peanut butter c... (read more) 3.0/5.0

Fujiya Lemon Squash Soda: This is a classic lemon soda that can be purchased in Japanese vending machines. From what I understand, Fujiya is a food conglomerate that makes many popular, long-standing snacks and drinks. This lemon soda tastes a little bit like sprite but with a more pungent citrus flavor. It's definitely really sweet, but it's well carbonated and refreshing. I'd get it again! 3.5/5.0
