Befco Kuriyama Bakauke Sesame rice crackers: Shaped vaguely like miniature banana or oblong boomerangs, these soy flavored rice crackers were purchased for under $3 from Sunrise Market in Manhattan. Each piece is individually wrapped and is just on the verge of being overseasoned, yet also has a sweet aftertaste. Pretty good overall, but probably not good enough to purchase again. 3.0/5.0

Berkeley Bowl Bar snack mix: The Berkeley Bowl bulk snack mixes are generally good, but this standard bar mix with cheddar crackers, pretzels, peanuts, and almonds is not really better than the sum of its ingredients. None of the flavors compete, but it’s not particularly interesting, and there are much better alternatives. 3.0/5.0

Lotus Foods Sriracha Arare Rice Crackers: I sometimes feel guilty when I purchase the Western version of classic asian snacks, made with likely responsibly sourced ingredients and marketed with minimalist, sans-serif packaging. But having had Lotus Food’s Arare rice crackers in the past, I had a sense that the difference in quality would be worthwhile, and it was. Black, red, and yellow rice crackers in a variety of shapes, from stars to squares, have a clear sheen from a chili-flavored glaze. They’re satisfying crunchy, and the hea... (read more) 4.0/5.0

Snyder's Wholey Cheesy smoked gouda baked crackers: These crackers are shaped like swiss cheese but flavored predominantly by cheddar cheese followed by gouda (according the ordering of listed ingredients). They’re rectangular in shape and largely filled with air so that they easily shatter on initial bite. They’re fully flavored, with a smoky gouda flavor that has just a hint of the white cheddar powder of flavored Cheez-Its or boxed mac and cheese. Overall, they’re very tasty, but they do have one flaw: because they come in a resealable ... (read more) 3.5/5.0

Trader Joe’s 3 Seed Multigrain Beet Crackers: A textural crossover between a tortilla chip and a cracker, this multigrain seeded beet snack from Trader Joe’s has a vegetal flavor without being uniquely identifiable as beet (beyond the color). Because of its crisp and slightly irregular texture, they seem like a slightly more unique substitute for corn tortillas and would probably pair nicely with a creamy dip. On their own, they’re a bit salty. 3.0/5.0

Calbee Hot Garlic Shrimp Crackers: Another unexpected take on this classic Chinese shrimp cracker, this time "hot garlic." Ridged crisps are tossed in a tangy seasoned coating that is unmistakably garlic but not particularly spicy. Somewhat reminiscent of a sweet paprika flavor mixed with MSG. Same delicious savory shrimp flavor. I don't know if I like it more than the original, but I don't regret trying it either. 3.0/5.0
