Skittles Sweet Heat Candies: First, I did not purchase this snack. It was shared with my batch at the Recurse Center earlier this summer, and when a bizarre snack is freely offered to me, you can bet I will at least give it a try. The bag contains your standard Skittles colors and flavors: strawberry, watermelon, orange, lemon, and mango. Just like normal skittles, they are way too sweet and consequently send sharp pains immediately through your dentures directly to your taste receptors. But a few seconds after the ... Sanko Sweet Rice Cracker: On my last trip to Hong Kong Supermarket, I felt nostalgic for the iced rice crackers I had growing up but decided to try a different brand than normal. Unfortunately, the Hot Kid Want Want Shelly Senbei crackers are much better than this one from Sanko. The Sanko rice crackers are saltier and not as crunchy, so the balance of the salty cracker with the sweet icing is not quite right. Orion Injeolmi Sweet Bean Turtle Chips: A sweet chip flavored with soybean powder and sugar. Individual pieces are multi-layered and crispy, basically the same as Aerial chips if those are familiar to you. Ridged corn chips may also remind Americans of Bugles, but they are not nearly as seasoned. Injelolmi is a Korean dessert that appears to be the same as mochi, cut into squares and dusted with a beige soybean powder that gives it a nutty flavor that isn't overly sweet. I would say this snack was much more dessert-like than s... (read more) 3.0/5.0

Chung Chun Rice Dog Sweet Potato Corn Dog: The first time I came across Korean corn dogs was in Shin Okubo, the Korean district of Tokyo. I had wandered into the neighborhood at sunset and was surrounded by neon signs and endless stalls of street food, all labelled in languages I couldn't translate but could generally tell what region of the world they represented. That's how I learned that fried cheese on a stick, and hot dogs covered with deep fried diced potatoes resembling an ear of corn from Willy Wonka, was a popular Korean j... (read more) 3.0/5.0

Wei-Chuan sweet potato buns: These frozen buns have a nice consistency when steamed, but I have mixed feelings about its sweet potato filling. It tastes true to the ingredient, with a similar soft consistency, but I find it to be uncomfortably reminiscent of baby food. It isn't too sweet but also verges on lacking flavor. 2.5/5.0
