Japonaise Bakery Green Tea Cake: Located on Beacon Street in Brookline, this small bakery has an assortment of pastries as well as packaged Japanese snacks. Their green tea cake is multi-layered, with green tea creme and a layer of gelatin on top. While the matcha flavor was not bad, the cake was a bit dry, and the gelatin was largely for texture (it didn't have much flavor). It looked better than it tasted. 3.0/5.0

Fukusaya Cube Castella: From Nagasaki, this traditional Japanese cake comes in a thoughtfully crafted package that's a joy to open. The laminated paper box has perforations for bisecting the cube before pulling down its sides to reveal a cake further wrapped in textured waxed paper. The paper that encases the cake is precisely folded like origami. Finally, there is a small plastic "fork" that you bend to snap together to eat the cake. The cake I had was about a week past its due date, and according to the site, no ... (read more)

Momofuku Milk Bar strawberry lemon cake truffles: Purchased in packs of three, these truffles have a cake-like candy coating and dense lemon interior. The strawberry crumble was too sweet, while the lemon truffle was tart. Overall, the flavors did not quite come together. 2.0/5.0

Drop the Mic Ice Cream: Continuing from the previous review, the second set consisted of the green apple sorbet, black truffle ice cream, and purple potato ice cream. My favorite was the green apple sorbet, which had always been fantastic (a tip: you can go across the street and order it any time at the dessert club). I've been told it has to be made fresh consistently since the vivid green color fades once it starts to oxidize. The truffle ice cream had a very potent, savory flavor. Interesting but not what I pers... (read more) 4.0/5.0

Drop the Mic Ice Cream: Chikalicious is my favorite dessert bar, and I highly recommend it if you haven't been before. They recently launched an ice cream menu at the bar when it had normally been closed M-W. The ice cream I previously had, both in plated desserts and across the street at their dessert club shop, were all impressive. On my last visit, I tried each of their current offerings and will share my thoughts on each one, though the overall score is representative of all the ice cream. Pictured here is the... Salt and Lemon Baumkuchen: Ever had a salted lemon flavored cake? I hadn't up to this point in my life, and I wish I had. This import from Japan is very well balanced, with a concentrated acidic flavor. Like most Japanese pastries, it's lightly sweetened. Texture is a bit dense but not dry. Honestly better than many fresh cakes I've had. 4.0/5.0
