Benkyodo Co Mochi: One of the original mochi shops in the US, Benkyodo in Japantown, SF opened back in 1906. Today, the storefront is an odd mix of diner counter, Asian 7-11-type snacks, and fresh made mochi. All of their mochi come in cupcake liners and taste very fresh because they are. The texture is softer than I personally prefer, and there is a little too much starch that coats your mouth with each bite. But I did enjoy that they were not overly sweet. Berkeley Bowl Cheddar Whales: From the bulk section, these cheddar crackers are larger than most (about 2x the size of a goldfish and 1.5x Annie's cheddar bunnies). Its cheddar flavor is less tangy than some (for example, Horizon cheddar crackers) but has a distinct taste all its own, I think from the different spices added, including paprika and turmeric. Berkeley Bowl Yogurt Pretzels: Berkeley Bowl's bulk section has a colorful assortment of yogurt-covered pretzels. I got a mix (the beauty of getting bulk), which are all priced at $7/lb. Clockwise from the top left is their peanut butter, blueberry, lemon, and raspberry pretzel. The fruit pretzels are all quite tart and acidic, and the peanut butter one has a more expected yet still satisfying flavor. Berkeley Bowl Organic Gravenstein Apple Sauce: During the weeks leading up to thanksgiving, these jars of apple sauce were prominently displayed at the entrance of Berkeley Bowl. The apple sauce is sweet and textured with a nice amount of autumn spices. My one of the best apple sauces I've had, but a good value. 3.0/5.0
