Jolibee Peach mango pie: Often when lots of people are effusive about something, I try not to learn too much about it beforehand so it doesn’t color my first impressions - like watching a trailer of a movie or reading a review of a novel. Jolibee is one of those establishments that has its own religion, so when I finally got to try it, I knew both that the fried chicken and mango peach pie were favorites but nothing more about them. I was surprised to find that the mango peach pie was fried, but in retrospect it’s ... (read more) 2.5/5.0
jolibee peach mango pie 2.5Milk Bar Pie ice cream: Available at Whole Foods, this Milk Bar branded ice cream is strangely slightly smaller than a pint and tastes more like breakfast than pie, thanks to oat-like crumbles throughout. It’s very rich and sweet and reminds me of Friendly’s butter crunch, with a brown butter caramel flavor. The type of dessert you can enjoy a few scoops of before you realize it’s too rich to eat more — but those couple of scoops are pretty enjoyable. 3.5/5.0

Being outside of the US last fall meant I missed the hit-or-miss frenzy of pumpkin flavored things at Trader Joe's. The flaky pastry is surrounded by a ring of sugar, and while the cookies are sweet, they aren't as sweet as most American versions and come in a more snackable size. Feeling happy to have easy access to an affordable cookie that reminds me of home. 3.5/5.0

This particular Ginza chocolate caramel cake flavor is part of a special edition "around the world" series which takes iconic desserts from various cities around the world. For example, it previously featured the NYC cheesecake. I've never actually heard of a Tokyo-specific chocolate caramel cake (and a quick Google Search comes up empty). The flaky biscuits inside have a lemon icing on one side only; the other exposes a glazed, crispy reminiscent of pie crust. The icing has a sweet but distinct sourness to it, great for fans of acidic treats that have a bit of an edge. Comes in a nice cardboard box that's perforated for easy serving and storing. 3.5/5.0
