Kashi Coconut Cashew Macaroon Chewy Nut Butter Bars: Kashi has not fared well on Tasty Snacking, averaging a score of 2.6 for products that fall too far on the "health food" spectrum of healthy snacks. With this new line of Chewy Nut Butter Bars, Kashi seems to have realized the limited marketing appeal of wholesome and nourishing ingredients, instead capitalizing on America's love of junk food, all while maintaining a consistent brand strategy. Take a look at the packaging: If you strip away the Kashi logo and minimalist typography, you're ... (read more) 3.5/5.0

Kind Peanut butter dark chocolate granola bars: Once you've had any Kind bar, you know exactly what to expect from any other flavor: mixed grains and textures (both chewy and soft), a decent filling portion size, and good value. This peanut butter chocolate flavor is standard, but satisfying. As far as granola bars go, Kind is reliably good. 3.5/5.0

Fugetsu-Do Peanut Butter Mochi: Long-standing Japanese confectionary shop Fugetsu-Do, located in Japantown in downtown Los Angeles, sells its mochi at various stores around California (I recently found their products at Berkeley Bowl). This set of Peanut Butter Mochi was purchased from Marukai in Glendale, LA and contained 6 sizable pieces of soft, chewy mochi filled literally with chunky peanut butter (maybe Jiff). It feels almost sacrilegious but simultaneously like a sort of twisted American dream where peanut butter c... (read more) 3.0/5.0

Safeway Community Market Chocolate peanut butter maltballs: Massive multilayered malted milk ball with a malted inner core surrounded by a peanut butter filling, all encased in a glossy layer of milk chocolate. A much more interesting alternative to peanut butter cups. Doesn't have the same melt in your mouth texture other malted snacks may have due to the sheer volume of it. Purchased from the impressively vast bulk section at the new Safeway Community Market (formerly Andronico's) in Berkeley. Serving size is apparently 7 pieces, but I can assure y... Calbee Honey Butter Potato Chips: Back when I lived in Cambridge, I frequently saw honey butter flavored potato chips on the shelves at HMart, and despite my proclivity for odd snacks, this is one I left untouched. Little did I know that in late 2014, honey butter chips set off a frenzy in South Korea, with convenient stores frequently sold out and single bags going for as much as $50 (a 2500% markup) on eBay (google the Munchies article to learn more). After hearing about this craze, my sister and I bought a bag from 99 R... (read more) 1.5/5.0

Perfect Bar Almond Butter Bar: Dense, nutrient rich snack with just about every ingredient you might find in a health food store, including flax seed oil, kale, rose hip, celery, kelp, and of course, almonds. Not a flavor combination I would ever crave. Texturally, it reminds me of a Power Bar without the glazed coating and with a more dry mouthfeel. Extremely filing, but you would hope so at over 300 calories per bar and 13g of protein. 2.5/5.0
