Kekou Almond tofu gelato: Tofu jelly with canned fruits is a classic Chinese banquet dessert made not with actual tofu but with gelatin, sugar, water, and almond extract. It was one of my favorite sweets to eat growing up, so I was excited to see the flavor at the menu at Kekou, an ice cream shop off Spadina in Toronto specializing in asian flavors. Kekou doesn’t use any stabilizers, which translates to gelato that’s more fresh but not quite as smooth. The tofu gelato was a little icy and a bit too sweet for my palat... (read more) 3.0/5.0

On my last trip, I purchased a small almond plum pastry, priced at just a little over $2. Inside were warmed, fresh slices of plum, while the pastry itself was flaky on the outside but comfortingly soft on the inside. Dusted with just a bit of powdered sugar, the pastry was faintly sweet yet distinctly almond-flavored. One of the more perfect little bites I've had this year. 4.5/5.0

I heard that the chefs behind the restaurants came out with a line of snacks and fortuitously found them stocked at Berkeley Bowl West. There was only one flavor on the shelf when I went, an almond and rosemary savory "granola" combining quinoa and sunflower seeds. Sadly, I found that it had a bitter aftertaste, almost like it the granola had been baked... (read more) 2.5/5.0

Oats and chopped almonds are held together with an almond butter paste. A spiced cinnamon flavor not unlike cinnamon toast crunch dominates the taste. Seems sweeter than its nutrition facts reveal, with 6g of sugar a bar. Like the coconut macaroon bar I previously reviewed, it's not particularly filling but tasty while it lasts. 3.5/5.0

Similar to Asha tea, they use fruit puree so that it has a bit of texture. The almond jelly is soft and tofu-like, and just a tad grainy. Overall, the drink was very fresh and well made; faintly sweet. Highly recommended. 4.0/5.0
