Happy Lemon Kiwi Matcha Slushie: I didn't expect to enjoy the mango matcha slush I had a few months ago at the Happy Lemon in Berkeley, so I decided to try the kiwi version in New York (I'm pretty sure this wasn't an option in California). Alas, despite the similar green color, this is not a match that's meant to be. If it were just a kiwi slushie, it would be pretty good because it had kiwi seeds for texture and was remarkably tart. But the addition of matcha threw it off balance. At Happy Lemon, I would stick to just ... (read more) 3.0/5.0

Bubble Tea Share Time Thai iced tea slushie: I went to the dentist yesterday and didn’t have any new cavities, which is quite a feat given the existence of this blog. Also, it’s getting hot in Berkeley. To celebrate, I got a Thai Iced Tea “slushie” with boba from Share Tea, a bubble tea shop on Shattuck in Berkeley a few blocks away from downtown. While I asked for it to be less sweet, I should have asked for it to have 0 added sweetness as it was still overly sugary. But the Thai iced tea flavor, though classic, was refreshing, and th... Happy Lemon Taro with fresh milk drink with boba: A tri-layer drink with boba at its base, a milk slush at the top, and bits of taro root sandwiched in between. Purchased at 0% sweetness, the boba, which had a honey coating, was sweet enough to keep the drink balanced. The taro root pieces had a good amount of bite and starchiness to give the drink extra substance. And the slushie was both creamy and rich. If you’re a fan of taro, you’ll like this drink! 3.5/5.0

Purple Kow Lychee slushie: I usually opt for milk tea or fruit teas when I go to bubble tea shops, but this time I went for the lychee slush at Purple Kow, a Bay-Area-based chain. Their drinks are served in a single-size short, fat bucket with substantially more than your typical cup. Their generosity was unfortunate in this case because even at 25% sugar, the drink was far too sweet, reminding me of the lychee mini jello cups you get at asian grocery stores. If you don’t like sweet, artificial flavors, don’t order th... (read more) 2.0/5.0

Fuku Strawberry Lemonade Slush: Lemonade can be the perfect complement to fast food, cleansing your palate in between bites of rich fried foods. Fuku's strawberry lemonade slush takes classic lemonade to a whole new level. A seemingly endless supply churns in their screw-driven slushie machine, its mechanics drawing your attention as much as its vivid pink color. The texture is consistent in a way that probably only a machine can achieve, with ice crystals that are just large enough to hold its texture. The drink itsel... (read more) 4.5/5.0

Happy Lemon Lemon cooler slushie: While some may find their drinks to be overwhelming tart, I appreciate the sharp, acidic lemon flavor of the Hapoy lemon classic lemon cooler slushie. This beverage checks all the boxes for an ideal drink: refreshing, well balanced, and affordable. Highly recommended! 4.0/5.0
