Morgenstern's x Repeller Tomato Gazpachoo Ice Cream Bar: Slightly larger than a stick of butter, this special edition ice cream bar from NYC-based shop Morgenstern's consists of gazpacho flavored ice cream coated in a thin tomato-flavored shell. The shell is softer than your regular chocolate dip because of its high fat content (it's made of cocoa butter and coconut oil), so the coating dissolves on the tongue quickly, exposing the fantastic combination of tomato, cucumber, and lemon that make up the ice cream filling. The dessert on the whole b... (read more) 4.5/5.0

Rakki Cafe Black sesame ube swirl soft serve: This Japanese dessert shop next to Reckless Records, in the Wicker Park neighborhood of Chicago, has some of the best soft serve I've had. I got their black sesame and ube swirl, a super refreshing and balanced combination. The black sesame was especially great, with a deep nutty flavor that was as savory as it is sweet. Morgenstern's Sumo Yuzu Pop: This is the last review I'll be writing of ice cream treats from Morgenstern's collaboration with Action Bronson. This double dipped yuzu pop is pure citrus in its highest form. Several layers of coating, with a smooth and somewhat slick texture, add to an intensely tart yet balanced citrus ice cream center. Anyone that loves citrus will be able to fully appreciate how excellent and singular it is. 4.5/5.0

Happy Ice Brown Sugar Boba Ice Cream Bar: This is the famed, verging notorious, Taiwanese brown sugar boba iced tea bar, containing tapioca balls, that have been sold out everywhere. The person who was able to purchase it did not reveal its source but did say that there were multiple boxes available at this unnamed shop in the city of Los Angeles. The bar is a true work of science, with the tapioca balls retaining its iconic stretchy and chewy consistency despite being embedded in a frozen ice cream bar that tastes exactly like br... Nanaya Aoyama Matcha (7) and Roasted Rice Tea Ice Cream: Nanaya Aoyama is a small ice cream shop near Omote-Sando in Tokyo and had been on my checklist of places to try for Tasty Snacking since before I arrived in Japan. Its menu features matcha ice cream at different levels of concentration, from 1-7, with 7 being the most potent (they claim it's the strongest in the world). On display, you see how matcha ice cream 1-7 goes from a light shamrock color to a dark forest green (though there isn't too much difference visually between #5-7). The ice... (read more) 4.5/5.0

中央製乳 愛知の梨アイス Pear Milk Ice Cream: Fruit is generally quite expensive in Japan, and it feels even more so because of the very small portion sizes – there's no so much thing as buying a large 1lb bag of grapes here. Fruits are also very seasonal, so for the most part, I've been eating only bananas and oranges and I seem to have missed pear season. That's why when I saw this pear dessert in the ice cream aisle, I was excited to try it. I had expected it to be a sherbet or even a type of Italian ice from its packaging, but it...
