Smitten Salted Caramel Ice Cream: The two things I dislike about the Bay Area are 1) almost everything is overpriced, and 2) people see technology as the solution to everything. If there were any type of snack that represented these fundamental problems, it would be Smitten. At Smitten, ice cream is made to order using liquid nitrogen, which, in theory, freezes ice cream faster and produces smaller ice crystals and, as a result, a smoother texture. Because each flavor is produced on its own machine, Smitten can only carry... (read more) 2.5/5.0

Cream Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream Sandwich with Chocolate Chip Cookies: For the past few weeks, I've passed this popular Ice Cream shop on my way back from Amoeba in Berkeley and always noted the long lines. At around 10pm last Friday night, it took me 8 minutes in line to get to the counter, where I was greeted with an overwhelming scent of butter and baked goods. While the menu lists over 20 flavors, only about 10 are actually available at any given time. I ordered their mint chocolate chip ice cream with two chocolate chip cookies for a surprisingly low pri... (read more) 4.0/5.0

Christina's Chai Ice Cream: Still my favorite place to get ice cream in Cambridge, Christina's seasonal chai-flavored ice cream is the perfect blend of spice, cream, and sweetness. It has a deep milky flavor, and the spiced cardamon and cinnamon blend builds over time. Perfect for the hot summer days we've been experiencing in Boston. Happy National Ice Cream Day! 4.0/5.0

Lemon Ice King of Corona Rainbow Ice: Practically a landmark in Corona, Queens, Lemon Ice King has been serving house-made Italian ices for over 60 years. I first found out about it on an episode of Real Food with Mike Colameco, which featured several Queens-based institutions. The corner shop has a wide array of flavors to choose from, but I had to choose the flavor I always ordered as a kid from my neighborhood's Italian Ice truck, Little Jimmy's. This ice, though, was far superior, with by far the best texture Italian ice I... (read more) 4.0/5.0

Weis strawberry, watermelon, and lychee ice cream bar: One of several snacks I received on my Virgin Australia flight, this frozen treat had a unique combination of fruits along with a vanilla base. I found the fruit component to have a remarkably clean flavor, where all three fruits are easily identifiable. The ice cream base was so-so: more icy than creamy. Pretty good for a mass-manufactured ice cream bar. 3.0/5.0

Mikawaya mango mochi ice cream: This brand claims to be the "original and best" Mochi ice cream. Whether it's true or not I cannot say, but the brand has permeated American supermarkets, with chains like Trader Joe's as stockists. It also seems to be the de facto choice for restaurants selling Mochi ice cream they don't make themselves. Luckily, the ice cream is very good. They have found a way to maintain a chewy and soft Mochi texture despite being frozen, and the ice cream is smooth and creamy. I usually find myself dus... (read more) 4.0/5.0
