Meiji Tsujiri Matcha Cone: It's been a long while since I had packaged ice cream like this in the states, with its familiar waffle cone base lined with chocolate that's a favorite at summer camps. The Japanese version if different in a few ways: first, the ice cream is level with the top of the cone, rather than overflowing in a round scoop topping the cone; second, the entire ice cream treat itself features a narrower cone, giving the snack an overall smaller footprint. I actually liked this ice cream a lot - the i... (read more) 3.5/5.0

Kellogg's Hershey Matcha ChocoBIts: It's fun to discover new products and brands in Japan, but there are also a lot of familiar brands offering different items especially for the Japanese market. You can find Kellogg's cereal, for example, but I've never heard of ChocoBits in the states, and I've definitely never had matcha-flavored cereal. The product photography is pretty misleading for this one. The square chocolate nuggets have a more muted tan-ish brown color and are unglazed; the matcha inside is more like a hardened i... Denroku Porippy Spicy Peanut Snack: I found these peanut snacks in what seemed to be the bar snack section, with a variety of nuts and dried seafood. I've had versions of this snack before in rice cracker mixes; it consists of a crispy rice cracker coating surrounding a single roasted peanut. It has a very unique sweet and savory quality, with a mix of seasonings and flavorings including honey and nori. Very tasty and affordable! Would definitely buy again. 4.0/5.0

Coca-Cola Frozen Coke : This Coca-Cola comes in a pouch that you're meant to freeze to enjoy a frozen Coke treat. There are other snacks in Japan that have this type of packaging, like the Coolish soft serve ice cream I reviewed a few weeks ago. You're supposed to completely freeze the package and then let it thaw for about 15-20 minutes before consuming, but I bought it in the refrigerated section at the grocery store, let it freeze at home until it was like soft slushie-like consistency, and then took it out of... Marusan Sweet Potato Soy Milk: Similar to Taiwan, there are a lot of flavored milk products on the grocery shelves. I decided to give a few a try. This one is a sweet potato-flavored soy milk that seems to only come in juice boxes, probably meant for kids. It does taste like sweet potato, but it's extremely sweet and as a result hard to finish even for a small juicebox. Imagine the pumpkin-flavored desserts you get in the US around Thanksgiving, but sweet-potato flavored. 2.5/5.0

Akagi Gari Garikun Ice Candy Soda Popsicles: These are popular soda-flavored popsicles that taste like a combination of Sprite and Ramune, with a slight pear flavor but mostly tasting of sugar. It has an ice-blue color and is sized just like fruit popsicles in America. Overall, it's so-so - something you might like as a kid but not particularly interesting or delicious as an adult. 3.0/5.0
