Pringles Cheeeeeese Flavor: For whatever reason, Japanese cheese snacks are rarely straight-up cheddar and often involve a mix of different types of cheese, resulting in a more creamy flavor. This Cheese Pringles snack, which I think may be exclusive to Japan, has a mix of cheddar cheese, mozzarella, and parmesan. Like typical Pringles, the underlying shape and taste (largely fried potatoes) is consistent; the cheese flavor definitely tastes distinct than regular cheddar but I can't say that I personally prefer it. ... Koikeya Demonic Consomme Strong Potato Cihps: I wasn't sure of the exact flavor of these potato chips when I purchased them – the packaging features roasted onion, garlic, and chicken wings, all alongside a demo stirring a cauldron of beige-colored broth. I have had other potato chips from this line of Strong potato chips, ridged potato chips claiming to have a more robust flavor offering than normal Koikeya chips. These tasted largely of sweet onion and black pepper to me, and after looking up the actual flavor from the Japanese on t... (read more) 3.5/5.0

Koikeya Strong Grilled Seafood Potato Chips: Koikeya has a line of STRONG potato chips, I guess indicating that they're bolder than regular potato chips. The ridged style is thinner than Ruffles, and more generally, I find that Japanese potato chips don't have the same substantial bite that American potato chips tends to have. This flavor reminded me a little bit of shrimp chips but it definitely had a slightly richer flavor, the type you get from imitation crab sticks. It was pretty decent but not one I find myself drawn to purchasi... (read more) 3.0/5.0

Koikeya Suppa-Mucho Ume Chips: A seasonal flavor based on umeboshi, a traditional pickled plum that has a sour sweet flavor. The chips are thin and crispy and have a unique tangy taste. Having not had umeboshi by itself before, it's difficult for me to assess how closely it tastes of the actual pickled fruit, but the flavor is unlike any chip flavor I've had before and I think is ultimately tasty and worth a try! This is a very widely available brand of chips that you can find at most convenience stores. 3.5/5.0

Doritos Mexican Taco tortilla chips: I wasn't expecting to write a review of this bag of Doritos; its familiar red packaging made me believe it was Nacho Cheese flavored, and honestly I was feeling kind of embarrassed that I was homesick enough that I was missing Frito-Lays. Unexpectedly, though, these are actually "Mexican taco" tortilla chips, with a significant line flavor combined with and chili and cumin powder seasoning. It definitely doesn't taste like nacho cheese and had no discernible cheese flavor. I personally pref... (read more) 3.0/5.0

Sweet Box Japanese black beef potato chips: A common potato-based junk food I see here in Japan but not in the states is french-fry-shaped chips, thickly cut like the British type you get with fish and chips but crunchy: extruded fried potato sticks. The most popular is Calbee Jagabee, though I actually have not yet tried it (you can get it easily in the states), but the bag I purchase is substantial and hearty in comparison, at least in terms of the diameter of each piece. The chips have a strong garlic flavor that tastes slightly sm... (read more) 3.5/5.0
