Kellogg's New Ontani Cereal: There are a few familiar American brands of cereal in Japan, but their offerings are slightly different. This cereal was made in collaboration with the chef at a famous hotel in Tokyo called The New Otani. It consists of 1/2 flakes and 1/2 granola, almost like muesli without the oats, and contains ingredients like sliced almonds, pumpkin seeds, and puffed amaranth. It has a honey flavor that's reminiscent of Honey Bunches of Oats. Definitely sweet, but as sweet as American breakfast cere... (read more) 3.5/5.0

Pocky Melon Pocky: I purchased this special packaged Pocky from Tsutaya Books in Meguro. The familiar biscuit sticks are coated in a waxy orange cantaloupe-flavored icing that tastes like melon candy. Very concentrated flavor and quite sweet, but I did enjoy it. One of the better melon-flavored snacks I've had. 3.5/5.0

Kikkoman Banana Soy Milk: Kikkoman has a bunch of fruit-flavored soy milk juice boxes that come in similar packaging, but differently colored. I got the banana milk from 7-11 to try, but it was shockingly sweet, like drinking liquid banana runts. Would not again. 2.0/5.0

Marusan Sweet Potato Soy Milk: Similar to Taiwan, there are a lot of flavored milk products on the grocery shelves. I decided to give a few a try. This one is a sweet potato-flavored soy milk that seems to only come in juice boxes, probably meant for kids. It does taste like sweet potato, but it's extremely sweet and as a result hard to finish even for a small juicebox. Imagine the pumpkin-flavored desserts you get in the US around Thanksgiving, but sweet-potato flavored. 2.5/5.0

Calbee Pizza Potato Chips: These are junk food potato chips I see commonly at convenience stores in Japan. (Calbee is kind of like the Japanese version of Frito-Lay.) Though the packaging shows pepperoni pizza, it doesn't have a meaty flavor to it and instead tastes oddly sweet, like too-sweet tomato sauce. The predominant flavor is sweet potato, but there's also a little bit of zingy cheddar flavor, but not much else that is reminiscent of pizza (for example, no oregano seasoning as far as I could tell). The chip... (read more) 2.5/5.0

Sweet Box Co. Singapore Chicken Rice Potato Chips: Ridged potato chips that are flavored like Singapore Chicken Rice, which I'm not sure I've actually had before but reminds me of a more peppery Hainanese Chicken, with a slightly boozy flavor (from rice wine). I don't believe it is actually meant to taste like rice - just the chicken that comes with the dish. The potato chips themselves are not so crispy and more thickly cut than normal ridged potato chips - they remind me more of Pringles in their potato flavor than Ruffles for example. ...
