Superbee sparkling honey and ginger soda: The final drink I purchased in Australia was another ginger soda I had never seen before. Incorporating Australian honey, the champagne-colored drink comes in a long, frosted glass bottle. The bubbles are small and delicate. Beyond this, though, the flavor was underwhelming, like a Canada Dry flavored with honey. There was very little spiced ginger aftertaste, and the honey dominated the drink. 3.0/5.0

Breadtop pork floss and honey bread: This sweet and savory (but mostly sweet) bread has a flaky, croissant-like crust and is topped with nori and corn. Inside is a scattering of pork floss. The combination of ingredients is surprising and would be worth purchasing again if the glaze were not so sweet 3.0/5.0

Hongluo honey twist cookies: From Beijing, these wheat cookies have a sticky glaze and a spare scattering of sesame seeds. They're packaged individually and come in a pleasantly ornate twisted shape. Unfortunately, I found the cookie to be dense yet oddly chewy on the exterior, probably due to the glaze. Overall, they were too sweet for my taste. 2.5/5.0

Sprecher's ginger ale: The first time I had Sprechers was at Momofuku Ssam bar back in 2009, and I was instantly a fan of their root beer. I found this large bottle, with two servings, at a sandwich shop in DC, and I was excited to try it given how much I love ginger. On first sip, the ginger flavor was prominent and spicy, but it finishes kind of musky due to the addition of honey. While I sometimes have honey with ginger tea, I didn't think it quite worked with this carbonated combination, though it was a good d... (read more) 3.0/5.0

Pitango Gilato: I stumbled across this highly regarded gelato shop during my travels in DC and tried four different flavors (two of which I purchased). The star anise was barely sweetened and distinctive in flavor; the blood orange, while very refreshing, tasted more of raspberry than citrus (the sign said it contained a bit of raspberry). I ended up ordering the milk and honey (very rich whole milk, the honey was slightly too sweet) and the cardamon (nice level of spice). Both had a great creamy texture. B... (read more) 4.0/5.0

Honest Tea honey green tea: From the Just a Tad Sweet line, this herbal tea has 19g of sugar in a bottle. Initially, it tastes of honey, but it finishes with a slightly bitter green tea flavor. Overall, a bit too sweet still for my taste. 3.0/5.0
