The New Primal Ginger and honey turkey jerky: Purchased at the Park Slope Coop, this turkey jerky has a strangely sweet ginger flavor, more like a meat-flavored ginger chew candy than ginger-honey-flavored meat. Texture wise, it has a chewy consistency with a slightly glazed exterior. Ginger and honey could work well in other contexts, but the overall impact of this snack is off balance and too reminiscent of tea I might drink when recovering from a cold. 3.0/5.0

Fong On Sweetened soy milk: I really love Asian soy milk, so I was looking forward to this housemade bottle from Fong On in Chinatown. The 16oz bottle cost a little over $2. I purchased the sweetened version, which tasted just like the soy milk you buy from street vendors in Taiwan; beany but loose in viscocity, very sweet but also thirst quenching. Overall, I liked it, but it was definitely on the sweet side - not something I could drink in a single serving. 3.0/5.0

Peter Pan Bakery Blueberry glazed donut: One of my co-workers graciously brought a selection of donuts from Peter Pan in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, a local favorite I've always wanted to try. This glazed blueberry cake donut was as good as any cake donut I've had, which is to say ok but not really a style I'd choose on my own. It has a crumbly, slightly dry texture; the sugar glaze was extremely sweet; the blueberries, though, felt generous and were slightly tart. 3.0/5.0

Clio Hazelnut Greek yogurt bar: Bought a second flavor of this yogurt dessert bar from Clio at the Park Slope Food Coop. The first one I tried was a chocolate covered strawberry treat, whose tartness I was impressed by. I was less impressed by this hazelnut flavored bar, mostly because it had less of a distinctive flavor (reminding me of a tart version of the noguat in a Milky Way candy bar, but texturally more set) and the interior ate very dry so that drinking a glass of milk on the side feels like a necessity. Dream Pretzels Sesame Pressels: Baked pretzel chips, shaped like flat mini bagels and golden brown at the edges. Not very seasoned on their own, so the predominant flavor comes from the nuttiness of the white sesame seeds. The packaging is upfront about this, with a label indicating it has 35% less sodium this regular pretzels. They beg to be eaten with a dip, and they taste particularly good with hummus. Purchased at the Park Slope Coop. 3.0/5.0

Keki Matcha cheesecake: My company lets us pick our birthday-treat-of-choice. I learned my lesson last year, when I requested my favorite dessert (mochi) but found there weren't good ways to order it fresh in NYC. This year I went for a local favorite instead: Keki cheesecake, which was introduced to me by my RC Food Club friends. My indoctrination to Keki was through their original Japanese cheesecake, which has an excellent light and fluffy texture, but we also ordered their matcha 'fancy' cake to try. It costs ...
