Oishi Marty's salt and vinegar flavored cracklings: I bought this snack because I saw chicharons on the package, but when I got home, I was upset and baffled to see they were vegetarian. Upon tasting, though, I'm impressed with how closely they were able to match a distinctively meaty snack. The cracklings don't melt in your mouth the way fatty chicharons do, but the aggressive salt and vinegar flavor combined with a crunchy, textured cracker bears a passing resemblance. There is no way a vegetarian designed this snack. While the packaging had messaging like "guilt free" and "0% trans fat," it is definitely not healthy; a single serving contains 4g of saturated fat and 230 mg of sodium. Also, it's laden with MSG, which contributes to its savoriness. I looked up more information on it online and came across a totally bizarre commercial from the Philippines. I recommend watching it. It doesn't say anything meaningful about the snack itself, but I can't imagine what kind of branding would help sell a vegetarian take on pork fat. In lieu of their marketing strategy, I'm telling you that it's worth a try. 3.5/5.0
