Fong On Can't Go Wrong Tofu Pudding with Red Beans, Grass Jelly, and Taro Balls: Fong On is a small family-run tofu shop on Division Street in Chinatown, right next to the Manhattan Bridge. I found out about it from a profile in the New York Times a few months ago, describing how the long-standing neighborhood tofu shop, which had been open for 80 years, had recently relocated and reopened after the son took over the family business. They sell freshly made soy milk, rice cakes, and doufu hua, all traditional Chinese favorites. Doufu hua is kind of like getting frozen yogurt, but with freshly made tofu substituting yogurt; it comes with a variety of toppings and a syrup of your choice. I ordered their "Can't Go Wrong" combination with ginger syrup, which came with sweet red bean, grass jelly, and chewy taro balls. The tofu itself had a very good soft texture and came out warm, but it was mostly neutral flavor especially compared to the sweet toppings. As far as toppings go, they were each pretty good, but I wish the red bean were a little less sweet, the grass jelly more herbal, and the taro balls a little less dense. Still, I don't know of a better place to get this dessert in NYC. A $5 small is quite generous and can easily feed multiple people. 3.5/5.0
