Ling Kee Beef Jerky: Around the corner from the East Broadway subway stop on the edge of Manhattan's Chinatown is a small shop called Ling Kee Beef Jerkey (sic). The shop sells pork, chicken, and beef jerky by 1/4, 1/2, or lb sizes, each laid out in stacks under a bright heatlamp. The shop specializes in Malaysian Jerky, which I hadn't had before but remind me a lot of Taiwanese beef jerky, which is nothing like American packaged jerky. Typically, asian jerky is moist, with a glistening, sweet glaze rather th... (read more) 4.5/5.0

People's Choice original beef jerky: Highly seasoned with a peppery coating, this jerky is not one of the best. Pieces are thin, flavor is not memorable. Handmade in downtown LA. 2.0/5.0

Perky Jerky Jamaican style turkey jerky: A wet rather than dry jerky, similar to what you might get with Asian-style jerky. Unexpectedly, the taste reminded me of Chinese sausage since it had a pretty sweet flavor. Spice mix finished with a bit of heat. Good quality turkey meat. 3.5/5.0

Perky Jerky original turkey jerky: A solid jerky snack with moist pieces of marinated turkey. On the sweet side overall, though it's balanced out to an extent by cracked black pepper. Each bag has 2 servings, making it a relatively pricy snack at almost $5 a bag. Still, it's high protein content makes it more filling than other savory alternatives from the Leanbox. 3.5/5.0

The New Primal Ginger and honey turkey jerky: Purchased at the Park Slope Coop, this turkey jerky has a strangely sweet ginger flavor, more like a meat-flavored ginger chew candy than ginger-honey-flavored meat. Texture wise, it has a chewy consistency with a slightly glazed exterior. Ginger and honey could work well in other contexts, but the overall impact of this snack is off balance and too reminiscent of tea I might drink when recovering from a cold. 3.0/5.0

Trader Joe's wild salmon jerky: Texture is surprisingly similar to meat but the flavor is very fishy (not in a pleasant way). Brown sugar and maple syrup add a strange sweetness. Not good and expensive. 2.0/5.0
