Bar pa tea Roasted oolong milk tea with boba: Located near Soho, Bar Pa Tea bubble tea shop is a sister shop to Pa Tea, another shop I reviewed earlier this summer. The chronology of my reviews is off, though - I actually went to Bar Pa first, not knowing they were related. This milk tea was alright and just average, like bubble tea you can get from any ok tea shop in California. The boba was actually below average, though, as it was too soft. I did however sample their oolong soft serve and thought t was surprisingly good, which is why... (read more) 2.5/5.0

Galil Roasted chestnuts: Part of a larger trend of packaging vegetables-as-snacks (e.g., fried snap peas, roasted seaweed, apple crisps), these roasted chestnuts have a slick coating that make you want to eat them with a utensil, ultimately taking away from the convenience of having it in a packable pouch. Otherwise, it’s largely not-messed-around-with. 3.0/5.0

Bao Tea House Roasted oolong milk tea: Bao is a little gem in the West Village, easily missable as it’s below street level. But you would be amiss to not try their drinks if you’re a fan of milk teas; they have some of the best I’ve had in the city. This roasted oolong tea is classic but clean, with a nutty herbal flavor and creamy, sweet milk. I asked for it less sweet, and it was perfect for me. 4.0/5.0

Hu Wang Roasted Seaweed Prawn Crackers: From Taiwan, these shrimp crackers are much lighter than the multi-color prawn crackers sometimes served at American-ized restaurants. They taste much better too, with a slightly sweet shrimp flavor dusted with powdered nori, which adds salinity without being overly salty. According to the packaging, "nutrients intact!" Recommended if you can find them... 3.5/5.0

Purple Kow Roasted oolong tea with boba: A so-so cup of bubble tea at this downtown Berkeley location of Purple Kow. Too milky to have much herbal flavor; the boba is slightly chewier than average. Generous cup given the price. 3.0/5.0

Young Tea Roasted oolong tea with grass jelly: This small tea shop in Seattle's Chinatown / International District is just a few steps away from their impressively sized Mitsuwa Market. It takes pride in its traditional Chinese herbal teas, and it comes across clearly in their drinks. The oolong milk tea I had was just right: more tea than milk wth just a bit of sweetness at 50%. The grass jelly was one of the most memorable I've had, with a silky texture and slightly bitter flavor that complements the sweet tea. Highly recommended! 4.0/5.0
