Fugetsu-Do Peanut Butter Mochi: Long-standing Japanese confectionary shop Fugetsu-Do, located in Japantown in downtown Los Angeles, sells its mochi at various stores around California (I recently found their products at Berkeley Bowl). This set of Peanut Butter Mochi was purchased from Marukai in Glendale, LA and contained 6 sizable pieces of soft, chewy mochi filled literally with chunky peanut butter (maybe Jiff). It feels almost sacrilegious but simultaneously like a sort of twisted American dream where peanut butter c... (read more) 3.0/5.0

Safeway Community Market Chocolate peanut butter maltballs: Massive multilayered malted milk ball with a malted inner core surrounded by a peanut butter filling, all encased in a glossy layer of milk chocolate. A much more interesting alternative to peanut butter cups. Doesn't have the same melt in your mouth texture other malted snacks may have due to the sheer volume of it. Purchased from the impressively vast bulk section at the new Safeway Community Market (formerly Andronico's) in Berkeley. Serving size is apparently 7 pieces, but I can assure y... Clif Bar Peanut and Toffee Buzz: Peanut and toffee: not a very common flavor combination, but I think it should be after trying this Clif Bar. More than other snacks, Clif bars seem to be the most effective at keeping hunger at bay. This particular flavor goes one step further by including caffeine to help you through a mid-day slump. It has the chewy consistency and glossy coating you expect from a Clif Bar, and you could probably guess peanut and toffee if you did a blind taste test. It's sweeter than I would prefer but a... JJ Bakery Peanut Mochi: Generously sized chewy and sweet mochi coated with peanut powder and filled with a sweet, textured peanut paste. Mochi is glistening on the inside. Holds up well in the fridge (I had it a day after it was purchased, and it was still delicious). 4.0/5.0

18 Rabbits Organic Peanut, Almond and Coconut Gracious Granola: There's a game I like to play at Berkeley Bowl that I call "Is it worth it?" Is that bag of cheese puffs so good to warrant $5 a bag? Is that bag of Granola actually worth $7? That's the question I asked when I purchased this San Francisco-based brand of granola that contains oats, almonds and pecans, and pumpkin seeds and is flavored with maple syrup and coconut. It isn't too sweet, but it has a rich, buttery flavor (and the fat content to prove it). Opening the bag releases a fragrant c... (read more) 3.0/5.0

Master Wang's Bakery Mochi: Brought back from Taipei, this brand of mochi treats comes in a variety box with individually-wrapped peanut, sesame, and red bean mochi. Since mochi is my favorite dessert, I can be an especially tough critic when it comes to this Japanese specialty, and it's not often I'm introduced to a new take. But after trying this brand, I've learned about a completely different texture of mochi that's slick rather than firm. While it's coated with a layer of starch like most packaged mochi is, biting...
