Smitten Salted Caramel Ice Cream: The two things I dislike about the Bay Area are 1) almost everything is overpriced, and 2) people see technology as the solution to everything. If there were any type of snack that represented these fundamental problems, it would be Smitten. At Smitten, ice cream is made to order using liquid nitrogen, which, in theory, freezes ice cream faster and produces smaller ice crystals and, as a result, a smoother texture. Because each flavor is produced on its own machine, Smitten can only carry a limited number of flavors. The offerings when I went were pretty run of the mill chocolate, vanilla, salted caramel, and pecan pie. I ordered the salted caramel, which was $5 for the smallest size. When ice cream hits the $5 range, you have to wonder whether it's really worth more than a pint of good quality ice cream you can get at the supermarket. The ice cream itself was admittedly pretty smooth, but I've had plenty just as if not more smooth made traditionally. The salted caramel was also too rich for my taste. Almost everyone around me ordered syrup on top of their ice cream, but I'm a purist – good ice cream shouldn't need any toppings and should speak for itself. 2.5/5.0
