Meiji Tofu Soy Milk: On my last trip to LA, my top priority was getting to try tofu from Meiji Tofu, a small shop in Gardena that specializes in hand-made tofu. I learned about Meiji Tofu from discovering that many restaurants in LA use its product. Unfortunately, after arriving at the shop at 10:30am on Sunday morning, we found they had sold out (they open at 8:30) and were thus closed for the day. Luckily, several Japanese grocery stores in the area stock their tofu and soy milk, so we quickly drove to Marukai Market, my new favorite Japanese market that sells a variety of homegoods and foods. There was a single bottle of their daily soy milk left, which was pricy at almost $7 but I figured was better than leaving empty handed. The milk itself is very thick, more like a shake than both American and Taiwanese bottled soy milk. Unsweetened, it has a concentrated soy bean flavor that leaves you feeling very full after a cup. It strikes me as a drink that is best consumed on its own, rather than trying to pair it with other foods. Alternatively, I can see it being successfully incorporated as a component within a milk tea or smoothie. If you are a tofu purist, you are sure to appreciate this high quality product. 3.0/5.0
