Neighborhood Restaurant Cream of Wheat: This hot, iconic dish from the popular Somerville brunch spot is great even in the summer heat. When I first had it five years ago upon returning to Boston for grad school, it turned me on to making Cream of Wheat at home, though I could never quite get the consistency and flavor that they are able to accomplish. It's creamy and spiced with a texture almost similar to tapioca pudding but with much smaller granules. I will forever associate this dish with Cambridge and will sorely miss it. 4.0/5.0

Berkeley Bowl Coconut Fig Organic Chunks of Energy: Purchased from the bulk section at Berkeley Bowl, the "organic chunks of energy" are dense cubes consisting of ground figs, oats, and nuts (almonds, I believe) with a strong coconut flavor. I brought them to work with me to see how effective they would be at helping me get through my post-lunch pre-dinner hunger pangs. Morgenstern’s Fourth of July special with strawberry and buttered popcorn softserve : Two summer treats, swirled into an unlikely softserve combination, topped with a smattering of patriotic sprinkles and a blueberry syrup. Individually, the two flavors were pretty compelling - the strawberry was sweet and refreshing, and the buttered popcorn was creamy and had a distinct salted savory flavor. Together, though, they didn’t quite work - and it was expensive, at $7. I don’t think we’ll see strawberry-flavored buttered popcorn on the shelves anytime soon. 3.0/5.0
