Gomaya Kuki Sesame Ice Cream: This is a rare spot I had actually bookmarked before arriving in Japan in my search for top ice cream shops. At Gomaya Kuki, off of a side street in Shibuya, you have only the choice between black and white sesame ice cream, but each comes in three varieties. For the black sesame, you can choose between triple rich, rich, and salted, while for the white sesame, they have triple rich, rich, and chunky multigrain. I decided to try the triple rich black and chunky multigrain. On the side ar... (read more) 3.0/5.0

Gott's Roadside Chocolate and Vanilla Softserve: After a long rainy week, I was craving a warm baked dessert and thought for sure I could find one in the Ferry Building on my way home. Unfortunately, I wasn't interested in cupcakes, leftover bread, or gluten-free desserts, and the line for Humphrey Slocombe was far too long. I noticed that Gott's Roadside had a sign for Strauss Creamery, whose yogurt I had recently enjoyed, so i decided to give it a try. Unfortunately, I realized afterward that their soft serve isn't made using anything... (read more) 2.0/5.0

Green Hat sweet corn ice bar: a milky and creamy ice cream base studded with real kernels of sweet corn. The flavor is surprisingly good and interesting, but the texture of the corn is a bit strange to bite into. Overall, the bar is a little bit on the sweet side, but it's a rich treat worth trying. 4.0/5.0

Grom torroncino gelato: I've been to Grom in NYC and also in Paris, but I was excited to try it in its originating country: Italy. During my trip to Trento, I bought the most Italian flavor I saw: torronico. The gelato is creamy and rich, and they mix in bits of almond nougat that are crunchy and nutty. The best part was definitely the texture; overall, the flavor was just a tad too sweet. I've heard from the locals that Grom has lost a bit of its artisanal street cred because of its recent acquisition by a large c... (read more) 3.5/5.0

Grom Strawberry and yogurt popsicle: Popsicle half dipped in a tangy yogurt followed by freshly sweet strawberry. Like their ice cream, the popsicle uses no artificial ingredients. I preferred the strawberry half, but the yogurt became more pleasantly tart the more I ate it. Purchased from their West Village shop. 3.5/5.0

Häagen-Dazs Soybean Flour Brown Sugar Mochi Ice Cream (Hanamochi): The ice cream aisle in Japan consists largely of individual single-serving sized portions (kiddie-sized), whether for popsicles or regular ice cream. The most ubiquitous ice cream brand seems to be Häagen-Dazs, which has many exclusive Japanese flavors. Their Hanamochi series, originally introduced in 2015, features mochi-topped ice cream. The brown sugar soybean flour flavor I purchased has a peanut-colored powder that often coats traditional mochi treats. You ideally wait about 5 minut... (read more) 4.0/5.0
