il laboratorio del gelato sorbet and gelato: I've known about this spot for some time because many restaurants in NYC offer their ice cream, but I never had the opportunity to give it a try until now. Located directly next to Katz's, the place has a bit of a clinical science lab vibe, with chemical abbreviations for each flavor and minimalist furnishings. The shop has a distinctly neutral scent. I think it's because there are no toppings, which I appreciated. It's really solely about the gelato here. I shared four different flavors, a... (read more) 5.0/5.0

Fresco Gelateria Lemon Basil and Strawberry Gelato: Located in the East Village, this small shop has an impressive mountainous range of gelato on display, each labeled with Scrabble tiles. They serve some of the best gelato the city has to offer. The lemon basil was equal parts sharp and herbaceous, and the strawberry flavor had excellent texture. Just the right amount of sweetness too. Highly recommended. 4.5/5.0

Cones cantaloupe gelato: Cones is a small ice cream shop on Bleeker St. in the West Village specializing in house-made flavors both classic and unique. The cantaloupe sorbet was superb, with a particularly concentrated melon flavor that still felt light and refreshing. Had small bits of fresh fruit. Perfect amount of sugar. I sampled their mate South American green tea (excellent) and corn (also great). My only criticism is that it could be more consistently smooth (some larger icier chunks), but the flavor doesn't ... Pazzo Gelato Butternut Squash Gelato: A seasonal flavor that makes me wonder if we should all be eating butternut squash pie to celebrate Thanksgiving instead of pumpkin pie. A delectable combination of spices (cinnamon and nutmeg, I'm guessing) and creamy squash flavor. Very smooth. One of my favorite desserts from this year. 4.5/5.0

Secret Scoop Thai Gelato Thai Iced Tea and Roasted Coconut Gelato: Just a few paces away from the Trader Joe's in Berkeley is a small ice cream shop specializing in Thai-inspired flavors ("Thai Gelato" refers to the unique flavors rather than a specific style of making gelato). Their curated set of gelato and sorbets range from chocolate lemongrass to soursop, originals you're unlikely to find elsewhere, even in a diverse, food-minded community like Berkeley. The Thai iced tea gelato is easily the best I've had; it's very lightly sweetened and tastes stro... (read more) 4.5/5.0

Divino Apulian peach gelato: The cubed package contains a palm-sized peach filled with gelato on the inside. After waiting about 10 minutes for the dessert to defrost, you separate the halves of the fruit and can scoop out the gelato with an included miniature plastic shovel. The gelato is very good, with a fresh, concentrated peach flavor. The peach itself is slightly tart and not very sweet, but eaten together with the gelato, the entire dessert is well balanced. From Southern Italy. 4.0/5.0
