Befco Scallop bakauke rice crackers: Shaped like mini boomerangs, these individually wrapped pairs of Japanese rice crackers come in a variety of flavors. This time, I purchased their scallop version from Sunrise Market in NYC, which was about $0.25 more expensive than their classic soy variety. The scallop crackers have a very strong salty and briny flavor that I wouldn’t necessarily identify with scallop but tastes of seafood more generally. It has a strong odor I couldn’t quite place until I suddenly realized they smelled ki... (read more) 2.5/5.0

Berkeley Bowl Cheddar Whales: From the bulk section, these cheddar crackers are larger than most (about 2x the size of a goldfish and 1.5x Annie's cheddar bunnies). Its cheddar flavor is less tangy than some (for example, Horizon cheddar crackers) but has a distinct taste all its own, I think from the different spices added, including paprika and turmeric. While I didn't find it overseasoned, reassessing the label made me realized that a portion has about 1/4 of your daily serving of sodium. I'm not convinced this is ... (read more) 3.0/5.0

Berkeley Bowl Southwest Snack Mix: I've gotten into the bad habit of going to Berkeley Bowl when I'm hungry, which means I'll usually stop by the bulk aisles and find something to munch on while I shop. The last time this happened, I picked up their Southwest Snack mix, which contains snacks I would never purchase on their own like corn nuts, multigrain tortilla chips, and seasoned cashews. The fully flavored snack is generously spiced, with a decent amount of heat and a little bit of smokiness. The best parts are the corn... (read more) 3.5/5.0

Berkeley Bowl Mini Animal Crackers: The usual suspects all make appearances: camels, dogs, horses, and other minimalist but immediately identifiable shapes. They are much cuter than your typical animal crackers, and also much less sweet, resembling european biscuits. Bite sized pieces make for easy snacking. Great value. 3.5/5.0

Berkeley Bowl Bar snack mix: The Berkeley Bowl bulk snack mixes are generally good, but this standard bar mix with cheddar crackers, pretzels, peanuts, and almonds is not really better than the sum of its ingredients. None of the flavors compete, but it’s not particularly interesting, and there are much better alternatives. 3.0/5.0

Bin Bin Coconut Milk Flavor Rice Crackers: I grew up eating Bin Bin rice crackers, the classic kind containing individually wrapped packets of 2 peanut-shaped rice crackers coated with a sweet and savory MSG seasoning. But did you know that they had coconut milk flavored crackers? I didn't until this weekend, when I stumbled upon this product at Uwajimaya. The coconut flavoring seems to be in the biscuit base itself, which still has the familiar crispy cracker texture of the original. I was hoping it would be a little more savory...
