Barbaras Snackimals Chocolate Chip Cookies: Flat, crunchy animal cookies whose cartoon shapes are more defined than the typically abstract characters of alternative brands. Classic chocolate chip cookie that's more satisfying than Teddy Grahams (though it's more expensive). Convenient resealable bag. A safe bet. 3.0/5.0

Trader Joe's Petite Pumpkin Spice Cookies: A seasonal version of Trader Joe's Pink & Whites (which, in turn, are knock-off animal crackers with sprinkles), these yogurt coated shortbread cookies are more distinctive, with a spiced ginger flavor and pumpkin-pie-flavored coating. They're really sweet, but given that the serving size is 4 cookies, you probably won't eat much at a time. I'm sure they graced many Halloween parties this season. Happy Halloween! 3.0/5.0

Trader Joe's Mini Dark Chocolate Mint Coins: About 3/4 of the size of a Girl Scout's Thin Mint, TJ's mini version is black on black, with a mint chocolate cookie covered in dark chocolate. It tastes exactly as you would expect it to, which isn't too different than a Thin Mint, just slightly thinner and with less of a chocolate coating. In other words, neither good nor bad. 3.0/5.0

Sejoyia Lemon Zest Coco-Thins: These cookies are made with 7 ingredients: coconut, cashews, sugar, lemon oil, cassava flour, and salt. They have a unique texture - thin and crispy, but also dissolves in your mouth due to the high fat content (from the nuts and coconut). Good acidic flavor, though they smell better than they taste. Pretty unique overall - would give other cookies from this brand a try. Purchased at the Park Slope Food Coop. 3.0/5.0

Oreo Crispy Sakura Chiffon Cake Cookies: In Japan, oreos do not come in their more familiar resealable pouch packaging and instead come in boxes with individually wrapped tubes; in this box, there are 3 tubes of 8 cookies. The Sakura Chiffon Cake filling is slightly tart and definitely tastes different than regular Oreos, but I don't know if I would identify it as cake-like. That being said, I've never had Sakura cake before, so maybe this is more accurate than I can personally judge. The closest comparison I can make is a very ... (read more) 3.0/5.0

Venus Delites Fig Filled Cookies: I purchased these cookies at Seijo Ishii, a grocery store specializing in imported products. I haven't seen Fig Newtons, or similar equivalents, since moving to Japan, and seeing them made me crave the flavor of the humble cookie. These were about 2/3 the size and had more of a crumbly rather than soft cookie exterior, but I found the chewy fig center to be more satisfying in texture and concentrated fig flavor than Fig Newtons, or the Newman's Own version. But I still prefer the softness... (read more) 3.0/5.0
