Japonaise Bakery Green Tea Cake: Located on Beacon Street in Brookline, this small bakery has an assortment of pastries as well as packaged Japanese snacks. Their green tea cake is multi-layered, with green tea creme and a layer of gelatin on top. While the matcha flavor was not bad, the cake was a bit dry, and the gelatin was largely for texture (it didn't have much flavor). It looked better than it tasted. 3.0/5.0

Lotte Choco Pie: Chocolate covered nostalgia. Unfortunately not as good as I recall from my childhood. Cake is quite dry, but the marshmallow filling is satisfying, and the chocolate is thin. I appreciate that it's lightly sweetened, with 10g of sugar in a pie (much less than you would find in an equivalent American snack). 3.0/5.0

Jiu Zhen Nan pineapple cake: From Taiwan, a country that reveres the pineapple cake. Cake itself is very buttery and rich, but the pineapple filling is substantial and satisfying. Good in small quantities. 3.0/5.0

Mount Auburn Carrot Cake: Recently while I was at the ER at Mount Auburn, I was unable to eat anything until 5pm after being admitted at 9am. Given that I was much hungrier than usual, I let myself order from carrot cake from their dessert menu. The cake was much more substantial than any other portion of the meal, and while the cream-cheese icing was too sweet, the cake moist and quite good. Chopped walnuts were added as garnish. Sometimes in moments of uncertainty, it's nice to have something so familiar and co... (read more) 3.0/5.0

味自慢 木于卜饅頭: I treated myself to this unusual snack from the Japanese supermarket Tokyo Fish Market without knowing anything about what it was. Guided by just a few words of English, I understand that it's a wheat cake filled with a red bean paste dyed white and yellow and topped with black sesame seeds. Each cookie is generously sized, but at 235 calories each, you would hope so. The snack overall eats a tad dry and is best accompanied by milk (I imagine it would pair well with tea too). It's intere... (read more) 3.0/5.0

Regent Pandan Cake: A half-sphere mini cake, baked-brown on the outside and shamrock-green on the inside. Has a light texture that eats a bit dry. Often paired with coconut, pandan leaves are popular in southeast asian cuisines like Thai and Indonesian; the flavor of this pandan cake fell somewhere in between rich coconut and light lemongrass. Fragrant and not too sweet, but the texture could have been more moist. 3.0/5.0
