Meisum Bakery peanut bun: Generous mochi dessert coated with coconut shavings and sweet peanut filling. The mochi itself is plump and soft, barely sweetened, while the peanut filling is slightly crunchy, lending a surprising texture. Overall, a very satisfying (and cheap!) snack. 4.0/5.0

Meisum Bakery Asian Pastries: I previously reviewed this bakery's mochi peanut dessert, which remains my favorite product. During my last visit to this small Chinatown bakery, I tried the egg tart and pineapple bun, both of which were fairly standard as far as Asian bakeries go. The egg tart was firm and cold, a sign that it had been sitting out for some time. Still, the flavor was not bad but ordinary. The pineapple bun was a bit better, with a nice crispy crumble that was just the right level of sweetness. Overall... (read more) 3.0/5.0

Milwon Black Rice Steamed Bread: Frozen steamed buns are some of my favorite quick breakfast items. Back when I lived next to HMart, I would purchase them frequently. After not having had them for several months, I was happy to find some at my local Korean grocery store. These Milwon buns are made with black rice, which gives them a speckled purple color. Each fits comfortably in the palm of your hand and has a red bean filling. The only positive thing I can say about this product is that it's not too sweet. Otherwise... (read more) 1.5/5.0

Mong Lee Shang Taiwanese mochi with sesame paste: One of the best pre-packaged mochi I've ever had. Perfectly sized for snacking with a sliver of red bean at its center. Sesame seeds add texture and nutty flavor. Delicious! 4.5/5.0

Natural Idea Finger Pancakes - Seaweed Flavor: My friend SengMing brought me this snack, which he purchased from 99 Ranch, an Asian supermarket. Directly translate to "Finger Pancakes" (there is no English on the label), these miniature biscuits are irregularly shaped and really do look like pancakes, with the same kind of coloration ( a darker toasted brown on the edges) that you get when you actually make pancakes on the stovetop. The sweet and savory seaweed flavor is super tasty and distinct, with a much more concentrated taste of ... (read more) 4.0/5.0

Nature's Soy Black sesame soy milk: I love Asian soy milk, which tends to be a lot less sweet and taste of actual soybeans/tofu compared to American soymilk (there's a very good chapter on this in the book Organic inc.), so when I went to Hong Kong Supermarket in Chinatown NYC, I checked out the refrigerated, fresh soy milk options. This brand happened to have black sesame and matcha soymilk, two of my favorite flavors. Since the half gallons we're quite large and black sesame is a bit more unqiue for this category, I purchase... (read more) 4.0/5.0
