Wat Mongkolratanaram Khanom Krok: My first exposure to this Thai street food was at Wat Mongkolratanaram, a buddhist temple in Berkeley right around the corner from Berkeley Bowl. Every Sunday, they host an outdoor market serving a variety of dishes, including pad thai, thai iced tea, curry, and beef noodle soup (a non-vegetarian buddhist meal). Along with these entrees are two desserts: mango sticky rice and khanom krok, the latter of which is $6 for 8 pieces. Khanom krok are a mash up of pancakes and rice pudding served... Wei Chuan squid flavored crispy fish rolls: Ingredients include lizard fish, red mullet, Chilean giant squid, and mitre squid. Upon opening, the bag smells strongly of fish food (which is pretty cannibalistic if you think about it). While the packaging shows what appears to be mini yellow spring rolls, the squid flavored snack is actually brownish-red. Each piece is about the width of a cinnamon stick and had a hollow interior. It's thin and crispy and tastes like dried squid combined with fish sauce. A bit of heat. High in seasoning. 2.5/5.0

Wei-Chuan red bean and jelly popsicle: Icy bar studded with red beans and slivers of green jelly. Jelly adds an intriguing texture but is mostly flavorless. Pop as a whole is in the sweet side. 2.5/5.0

Wei-Chuan sweet potato buns: These frozen buns have a nice consistency when steamed, but I have mixed feelings about its sweet potato filling. It tastes true to the ingredient, with a similar soft consistency, but I find it to be uncomfortably reminiscent of baby food. It isn't too sweet but also verges on lacking flavor. 2.5/5.0

Wei Long Spicy Konjac Crisp: I purchased this Chinese snack from JMart in Flushing knowing it would either be surprisingly good or strangely awful. The packaging had limited English, with a stickered label saying it was a product from China, had been imported and distributed by a center in East Williamsburg, and contains as its main ingredients drinking water (as opposed to non-potable water) and edible salt and sugar (versus inedible). While the illustration on the cover looked a bit like tripe, there were no meat in... (read more) 2.5/5.0
